Darning Workshop at Old Flame Mending
Learn to darn! If you have holes in your clothes, we can help you learn how to fix them yourself!
This is an online class- please come prepared with 1-3 garments to mend. Holes should be no bigger than the size of a clementine/mandarin orange. We highly recommend starting with a sweater, but you can also mend items like socks, knit scarves, and medium weight wovens (i.e. cotton flannel, wool flannel, linen, gauzy fabrics).
Denim, lightweight fabrics, t-shirt material, leather/suede do not work well with this technique.
Materials list:
-darning egg (alternatively, a small orange or other piece of citrus fruit that fits in your hand comfortably)
-yarn or embroidery floss
-variety of needles: darning, tapestry, embroidery
-scissors
*materials available for purchase in our kit

Hemming by Hand Workshop
Learn to hem! If you have a garment that is too long in the length, legs, or sleeves, we can help you learn how to shorten it to fit your body properly.
The first half of the class will focus on measuring, pressing, and two different types of hems: backstitch and invisible (aka “blind”). All stitching will be done by hand. During the second half of the class, participants will have the opportunity to measure + begin to stitch their own garments in need of shortening.
Taught by founder Rebecca Harrison.
Ticket includes a materials kit for participants to take home.

Pop-up at Rustbelt Fibershed Symposium
We are super excited to return for our second year at 78th Street Studios for a day filled with creativity, inspiration, and community. The Rust Belt Fibershed Symposium is convening regional voices from across our local fiber and textile community.
Along with a panel of guest speakers in the morning, the afternoon will be immersive and hands-on: learning stations, vendor tables, a clothing swap, and more! Whether you're a textile enthusiast, designer, farmer, gardener, culture shifter, climate advocate, clothes-wearer (we know you are!), someone who sees the connections between all of our living systems, someone who wants to get plugged into a community, or simply curious about the power of textiles to create an enlivened future, this event is a must-attend.
The pop-up is free from 2-4 pm, and we encourage you to attend the speakers portion in the morning as well!
